Can an entire town be canonised? That is what happened to the Martyrs of Otranto \u2013 800 martyrs in the name of their faith.<\/h4>\n\n

The history of the Christian Church is marked by terrible and bloody episodes. Just as Jesus endured the Passion and death<\/strong><\/a> in the name of who He was and the message of hope and salvation that He bore, so too did the early Christians have to endure persecution, torture, and often death<\/a> <\/strong>to uphold their choice of life and religion. But these terrifying events did not only occur in ancient times. The story of the 813 Martyrs of Otranto<\/strong> dates to the end of the 15th century, in 1480 to be precise. The darkness of the Middle Ages had long since given way to the splendours of the Renaissance. Humanism had placed man once more at the centre of the world, on the one hand by recovering classical culture and art, on the other by fostering a more conscious religiosity, aimed at the search for God and a higher spiritual aspiration. Lorenzo de\u2019 Medici and his family had brought about a cultural revolution that swept across Italy, and cities were filled with monuments, palaces, and works of art destined for immortality. Yet in the shadow of this splendour and civilisation, human history continued to be dragged through war, mud, and acts of unspeakable cruelty.<\/p>\n

Such was the case in the city of Otranto, in Salento, where, on 14 August 1480<\/strong>, more than 800 men were barbarously executed on the Hill of Minerva, just outside the city walls, for refusing to renounce their faith. But they were not the only victims of that dreadful day, when the Turkish army of Gedik Ahmet Pasha overran the city after fifteen gruelling days of siege. The Turkish retaliation against the citizens of Otranto, who had resisted conquest to the very end, was particularly savage.<\/p>\n

The Martyrs of Otranto, already declared Blessed by Pope Clement XIV in 1771, were canonised on 12 May 2013 by Pope Francis<\/strong>.<\/a> Every year, on 13 August<\/strong>, Otranto commemorates the courage and devotion of the 813 Heroes and Holy Martyrs of Otranto. Let us look at their story.<\/p>\n

The Story of the Martyrs of Otranto<\/h2>\n

The capture of Otranto by the Turks formed part of the great conquest plan of Mehmed II<\/strong>, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who in the 15th century sought to extend his rule across the Mediterranean. For this reason, on 28 July 1480, he sent part of his fleet to Salento to conquer the city of Otranto. Supported at first by the King of Naples, the people of Otranto attempted to stop the invaders at the Alimini Lakes<\/strong>, about 35 km from Lecce. Despite being outnumbered, and although the men of Otranto were mostly fishermen, farmers, and merchants, they managed to overcome the Turkish army, thereby giving the rest of the population time to take refuge within the city walls<\/strong>. A long siege<\/strong> ensued, during which the people of Otranto appealed in vain for help from King Ferrante and Archbishop Francesco De Arenis. Eventually, the city fell under Turkish bombardment<\/strong>, and on 11 August, after 15 days of siege, the invading army breached the walls and poured into the city. A massacre followed, during which all males over the age of fifteen were killed, and women and children were taken into slavery. On 14 August<\/strong>, Gedik Ahmet Pasha ordered that the survivors be bound and led to the Hill of Minerva. There he demanded they renounce their faith<\/strong>, and upon their refusal, had them beheaded<\/strong> before their families. That day, over 800 Otranto citizens<\/strong> were martyred. The first to be beheaded<\/strong> was an elderly tailor, Antonio Pezzulla, known as “Primaldo”. According to legend, his decapitated body remained standing until the last of his fellow citizens had been martyred.<\/p>\n

Later, Alfonso of Aragon, son of King Ferdinand of Naples, succeeded in recapturing Otranto, but by then the blood of its martyrs had already been shed.<\/p>\n

The Relics of the 800 Martyrs of Otranto<\/h2>\n

Today, the remains of the Martyrs of Otranto are kept in seven wooden reliquaries housed in the Chapel of the Martyrs<\/strong> in the city\u2019s cathedral. Other relics are preserved in the Cathedral of Naples<\/strong> and in other churches in the area. It is said that when the Neapolitans finally retook the city, they found the bodies of the decapitated Otranto citizens still incorrupt.<\/p>\n

In 1888, part of the relics of the martyrs<\/strong> <\/a>from the Battle of Otranto were transferred to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Valleverde in Bovino, and to this day, what remains of these Heroic Martyrs can be found in churches in Puglia, Naples, and as far afield as France and Spain.<\/p>\n

The Canonisation of the Martyrs by Pope Francis<\/h2>\n

The event aroused such emotion that as early as 1539 there was talk of canonising the Martyrs of Otranto. In December 1771, Pope Clement XIV declared the 800 Otranto citizens killed on the Hill of Minerva as Blessed<\/strong>, and a strong devotional<\/strong> cult immediately arose around them, leading to their being named the patron saints of Otranto.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Pope Benedict XV<\/strong>I<\/a> recognised Antonio Primaldo and his fellow citizens as martyrs of the faith, and also recognised the miracle of a nun\u2019s healing attributed to the Martyrs of Otranto.<\/p>\n

On 12 May 2013, Pope Francis<\/strong><\/a> declared their canonisation. The Martyrs of Otranto were officially proclaimed saints, and the entire city celebrated their sacrifice with love and devotion.<\/p>\n
