Jesus’ words are extraordinary for their time, and it is not difficult to understand how they continue to inspire believers and nonbelievers today.\u00a0Jesus overturns the expectations and conventions of the time<\/strong>, preaching a\u00a0message of love, forgiveness, justice and compassion<\/strong>\u00a0that challenges the hierarchies and hypocrisies of society.<\/p>\n Through the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers a\u00a0transformative vision of divine law<\/strong>, delving into the fundamental principles of the\u00a0Ten Commandments\u00a0<\/strong>and inviting his listeners to\u00a0understand the heart of morality and spirituality<\/strong>. They are not just a list of abstract precepts, but the joyful proclamation of the\u00a0life given by God\u00a0<\/strong>to those who love, of a new world characterised by peace, sincerity, and justice. The evangelical beatitudes are present both in Jesus’\u00a0Sermon\u00a0<\/em>on the Mount and in the\u00a0Sermon on the Plain<\/em>\u00a0in the Gospel according to Luke (Lk 6:20-38). They constitute an essential component of Christ’s teachings<\/strong> <\/a>and offer a profound and universal spiritual guide to all who seek the way of beatitude and divine benevolence.<\/p>\n Their importance is such that a reduced version of the beatitudes is also found in verses 54 and 69 of the\u00a0Gospel of Thomas<\/em>,\u00a0an apocryphal gospel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that does not narrate the life of Jesus, but collects his sayings.<\/p>\n Jesus offered a precious gift to humanity through the Beatitudes. The apocryphal gospels: what differentiates them from the canonical ones<\/a><\/strong> But what are the Beatitudes?<\/p>\n The Sermon on the Mount from\u00a0Matthew 5:1-12\u00a0<\/strong>contains\u00a0nine<\/strong> of them:<\/p>\n Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<\/em> The\u00a0Gospel of Luke<\/strong>\u00a0contains four\u00a0beatitudes\u00a0<\/strong>combined with four\u00a0woes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The\u00a0four beatitudes<\/strong>\u00a0(Lk 6:20-23) are:<\/p>\n Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.<\/em> The\u00a0four woes<\/strong>\u00a0(Lk 6:24 -26) are:<\/p>\n But woe to you, rich people, because you already have your consolation.<\/em> Lastly, in\u00a0the\u00a0Gospel of Thomas,<\/strong>\u00a0we read:<\/p>\n \u00abJesus said, ‘Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’\u00bb<\/em>\u00a0(Gospel of Thomas, 54)<\/p>\n \u00abJesus said, ‘Blessed are you, when you are hated and persecuted; and there will be no place left where you will be persecuted.” Jesus said, \u201cBlessed are those who have been persecuted in hearts: it is they who have truly come to know the Father. Jesus defines his disciples as\u00a0the salt of the earth<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the light of the world<\/strong>, urging them to shine their light before men, as a model of virtue and demonstration of the existence of God the Father.<\/p>\n How to pray for grace in the Marian Month<\/a><\/strong> The\u00a0First section of the Sermon on the Mount<\/strong>\u00a0(5:17-48) deals with the\u00a0complete fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets<\/strong>, but with new presuppositions, derived from the Ten Commandments, which go beyond\u00a0the simple written rule, invoking mercy, piety and love for one’s neighbour.<\/strong><\/p>\n Fundamental is the reassurance that Jesus provides, regarding His will to fulfil what is\u00a0written in the Law and announced by the Prophets<\/strong>,\u00a0not to abolish or<\/strong>\u00a0renege on everything that was written and said before His coming (17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish, but to fulfil<\/em>). This statement is important because it reaffirms the continuity between the Jewish tradition and Jesus.<\/p>\n The sermon continues with a\u00a0new definition of Justice\u00a0<\/strong>by Jesus. Authentic justice, according to God’s will, goes beyond the legalistic rigorism of the\u00a0scribes and Pharisees, who cling<\/strong> to the letter of the law without understanding its true spirit (20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven<\/em>). This\u00a0divine justice is permeated by love<\/strong>, capable of\u00a0forgiving and embracing the authentic joy that comes from the living Word<\/strong>\u00a0that resonates within us. Instead of being imprisoned in the rigidities of external legality, unnecessarily severe and deaf to God’s Mercy,\u00a0God’s true justice is expressed in forgiveness, mercy and love towards others<\/strong>. It is a justice that\u00a0frees hearts from hypocrisy and pride<\/strong>, allowing them to live according to the principles of\u00a0compassion and humility<\/strong>\u00a0taught by Jesus.<\/p>\n A deepening of the\u00a0Ten Commandments<\/strong><\/a> follows, with examples and explanations: do not kill, live in concord with your brothers, agree with your adversaries, do not commit adultery, not even with thought\u00a0(28 but I tell you: whoever looks at a woman to desire her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart),\u00a0<\/em>do not perjure yourself.<\/p>\n Again, Jesus recommends that you\u00a0do not react to offenses with violence<\/strong>\u00a0(39 but I tell you not to oppose the evil one; indeed, if one strikes your right cheek, you also turn the other<\/em>to him) and\u00a0invites you to love your enemies<\/strong>:\u00a0“44 But I tell you: love your enemies and pray for your persecutors, 45 so that you may be children of your heavenly Father, who makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and makes it rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For\u00a0if you love those who love you, what merit have you?<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/em>This exhortation adds to and completes the commandment to love one’s neighbour,\u00a0adding to it\u00a0love for the enemy and for the stranger, as we also see, for example, in the Parable of the Good Samaritan.<\/strong><\/p>\n The\u00a0Second section of the Sermon<\/strong>\u00a0(6:1-18) instead focuses on\u00a0the fulfilment of justice before God<\/strong>, against human pride, ostentation and self-referentiality.<\/p>\n All the rules of conduct and coexistence listed in the first part must not be followed only to\u00a0gain the admiration of others<\/strong>. In the same way, good works, charity, mercy,\u00a0do not need an audience<\/strong>\u00a0that approves them:\u00a0“2 Therefore, when you give alms, do not blow the trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to be praised by men. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may remain secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n In equal measure, prayer should not necessarily be practised in public<\/strong>, to be seen by men.
