Today we want to talk to you about the Nativity itself and <strong>10 interesting things about of the most important Christmas symbols<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2>Etymology of the word \u201cPresepe\u201d (Nativity)<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We begin with the word \u201c<em>presepe<\/em>\u201d (nativity), an interesting word whose meaning is interesting to look into. Therefore, the word \u201cpresepe\u201d comes from the Latin \u201c<em>praesepe<\/em>\u201d, which simply means \u201ccrib\u201d. So baby Jesus\u2019 improvised crib ended up being the name for the whole scene that reminds us of his miraculous birth every year!<\/p>\n<p>Even words that define the nativity in other languages are derived from a Latin word meaning crib: \u201ccripia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There is \u201ccreche\u201d, \u201ccribe\u201d, \u201ckrippe\u201d, \u201ckrubba\u201d or even \u201cpresepe\u201d in French, English, German and Swedish. The words \u201cszopka\u201d in Polish and \u201cwertep\u201d in Russian still mean crib and are used to define the nativity.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2>The first Nativity in history<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It was <strong>San Francesco d \u2019Assisi <\/strong>who wanted to represent the <strong>Birth of Jesus<\/strong> in a realistic way.<\/p>\n<p>He particularly did it to benefit illiterate Christians who could not read the New Testament, particularly the sections about this extremely important event. This was December 1223.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2>The world\u2019s oldest nativity<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The oldest nativity in the world is preserved in Bologna in the Basilica di San Stefano. It dates back to the 13th century. It is very big and the characters are real statues made by master sculptors and decorators.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h2>Lecce\u2019s papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 nativity<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A Lecce nativity has always been known for being made out of papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9. At the end of the 1800s, there were barbers who made papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 and then made nativity statues and sold them at the Santa Lucia Fair to thicken up their miserable wages.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h2>Azteca: a Guinness nativity<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the Azteca stadium in Mexico City, there is a Guinness nativity scene made by primates, populated by more than 1500 statues, many of which are mechanised.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h2>Nativity statues of Via San Gregorio Armeno (Napoli)<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In via San Gregorio Armeno, in Napoli, nativity artisans make statuettes every year made with traditional methods, but they use contemporary famous figures, like politicians, actors and people in show business. It is situated on a hill that dominates Cinque Terre, and it is exclusively composed of figures made of scrap and recycled material.
